While most people have a facial skincare routine that they regularly follow, the skin on the body often misses out. It tends to be more of an afterthought, failing to receive the same care, attention, and quality of products that the face is treated to.
While it’s true that the skin on the body is much thicker than the skin on the face, meaning that it takes longer for the skin on the body to display any visible signs of aging, the body still has to deal with various skin concerns. Sure, you have the option of hiding them away under clothing, but wouldn’t it be better if you were able to give your body the same smooth, soft, and radiant finish that you’re hoping to achieve for your face?
Fortunately, partly thanks to the ‘skinification’ trend, which sees facial skincare principles and ingredients being applied to the body too, body care is now booming. Today’s body care products go far beyond minimal maintenance, enabling you to truly pamper the skin on your body and lavish it with the love it deserves.
Ready to give the skin on your body the TLC it needs? Keep reading as Avinichi explains how to do just that!
Upgrading Your Shower Routine
Just like when it comes to facial skincare, the first step in giving the skin on your body all that it needs is cleansing. This is often the first hurdle to trip people up – so many of the body washes on the market contain harsh cleansing agents and poor quality ingredients. Your skin deserves better than this, so don’t skimp when it comes to your choice of body wash. Go for a formula that will gently cleanse while also offering moisturizing properties. This will ensure that your skin is left feeling supple and soft afterward.
While we’re on the topic of showering…
Don’t forget that hot water is one of the most damaging things to expose your skin to. The sebum on your skin, which leaves your skin feeling conditioned and protected, will start to melt when subjected to water that’s warmer than 86°F. Washing that layer of your skin away will weaken your skin barrier, leaving it more susceptible to damage. While there’s nothing wrong with showering in temperatures slightly higher than 86°F, don’t go overboard. Preserving the integrity of your skin’s natural protective barrier will give your skin a much healthier finish.
Next-Level Body Exfoliators
Exfoliation is a crucial part of skincare. There are now so many different ways to exfoliate your body, so take advantage of them!
Body scrubs are a classic. The newer body scrubs on the market tend to contain ingredients that were previously only ever really found in facial skincare products, like the vitamin E in the Avinichi Gleaming Radiance Body Exfoliator. This salt scrub will leave the skin on your body feeling smooth and polished.
There are now also chemical exfoliators designed for the skin on the body. However, these tend to be best suited for those with oily, acne-prone skin. For everyone else, physical exfoliation works just fine!
This is also why dry brushing has become so popular. This physical exfoliation technique involves running a specialized brush over your body to dislodge dead cells, which are then washed away.
However you decide to exfoliate your body, don’t do it too often. Although the skin on your body is thicker and tougher than the skin on your face, it’s still susceptible to over-exfoliation. Avoid exfoliating daily – two to three times a week is all that your skin needs.
Hydration is Everything
Moisture is a key part of every single process that takes place in your skin, making it important to ensure that your skin cells have enough of it. While great focus is placed on keeping facial skin hydrated, the skin on the body needs access to plenty of moisture too.
As we mentioned above, the skin on the body is thicker than the skin on the face. This calls for a richer moisturizer than the one you use on your face – a formula that’s capable of penetrating through those layers to fully quench your skin cells.
Body butters are great for this. They’re usually slightly thicker than body lotions and creams, which can sometimes fail to moisturize enough. However, while traditional body butters have always been relatively simple, the body butters of today have so much more to offer. Take the Avinichi Glowing Argan Body Butter as an example. Thanks to the combination of argan oil and vitamin E, it will leave your skin feeling buttery soft.
For an extra boost of hydration when moisturizing your body, always try to apply your body butter to damp, rather than dry, skin. Why? Because if your skin is damp, this means that there are extra water molecules sitting on its surface. Instead of wiping these away or allowing them to evaporate, applying a moisturizer over the top will lock that moisture into your skin. This gives your skin cells access to even more moisture!
Prioritizing Protection
You’re probably aware of how sunscreen is the single most important product that you should be using on your face. Well, the same applies to your body too! Just like the skin on your face, the skin on your body is also vulnerable to UV damage. Sure, it may not show the signs of this quite so quickly. However, your SPF neglect will soon catch up with you in the form of wrinkles, sagging skin, and discoloration.
Think that you can skip the sunscreen because your body is covered with clothing? Think again. While dark and thick fabrics should provide sufficient protection, light and thin ones won’t. Anything with a loose weave will also give UV rays access to your skin.
Plus, chances are that you haven’t completely covered your body from the neck down. This means that certain areas of your skin will still be directly exposed to the sun, be it your chest, shoulders, hands, ankles, or anywhere else. This means that sunscreen should never be skipped! The good news? There are now so many advanced body sunscreens out there. Again, pick one that contains a range of beneficial ingredients. Not only should it protect your skin from the sun, but, ideally, it should also moisturize and provide antioxidants.
Of course, it’s not just the sun that your body needs protection from. The cold can have a damaging effect on your skin too, leaving it dull and dry. Warm and thick clothing can help with this, providing a buffer between your skin and cold temperatures. Keeping your body moisturized will also help counter the effects of the cold.
Body Masks Are Now a Thing
One area in which body skincare has really taken off is masking. Previously, masks were only designed for the face. Now, however, you’ll find an array of masks available for different parts of your body.
Our favorite? The GloUp Beautifying Neck, Chest & Hand Masks from Avinichi. These luxurious hydrogel masks are infused with sodium hyaluronate, algae powder, noni fruit extract, and many other ingredients that bring moisture and antioxidants to the skin. With separate masks for the neck, chest, and hands, you’ll be able to give your skin a boost whenever it needs a pick-me-up.
Interestingly, many are now also using face masks on the body. While some face masks won’t make much of a difference to the skin on the body, clay masks can have a transformational effect. If you struggle with body acne, targeting problem areas with a clay mask will leave your skin feeling clearer and less congested. Try a thermal clay mask, like the Avinichi Phyto Remedy Thermal Mask, and the results will be even more impressive!
Seasonal Strategies
Ask any dermatologist whether you should be switching up your skincare routine as the seasons change, and they’ll say a resounding yes. While it isn’t necessary to do this four times a year, differentiating between summer and winter when it comes to your skin is important.
While this may be the case, many tend to use the same body care products year-round. Fortunately, this is now also changing…
As more and more people recognize the importance of seasonal skincare, they’re applying those strategies to the skin on their bodies too. For example, in addition to swapping their rich winter face cream for a lighter moisturizer in the summer, they’re also putting aside their thick body butters in favor of lighter lotions.
How you cleanse your body should also be adapted to the seasons. In the summer, your skin will require more cleansing power. Your cleanser will need to be capable of tackling the extra sweat and sebum produced by the skin during the warmer months. This is something that your winter cleanser won’t need to deal with. Instead, in the winter, when your skin will be vulnerable to dryness, a gentle body wash is a must.
Body Skincare Takes Center Stage
Although the skin on your body may not be out on display to the world in the same way that your face is, it’s still important to give this skin the care that it needs. While body skincare has never been as popular as facial skincare, this is starting to change. More and more skincare brands are now upgrading their body care formulas, swapping them out for blends that make more of an impact. If this is something that you haven’t yet explored, it’s time to do so. Give the skin on your body the attention that it deserves, and you’ll be rewarded with a body that looks and feels silky soft and beautifully healthy.
